Ali has over 20 years experience as a senior manager and consultant in the public and voluntary sector, having spent many years working in the cultural sector. She now supports a variety of organisations to analyse situations and assist in policy development.
She is a trainer in customer care, supervision and management, and an experienced coach and executive mentor. Business planning and organisational reviews are her particular speciality and she has undertaken several major Best Value Reviews for local authorities.
As a local authority chief officer controlling a budget of over £7m Ali was responsible at a strategic level for arts, heritage, libraries and tourism services. She oversaw numerous large change projects and contract negotiations, and the move from a district to unitary authority.
While general manager of a prestigious regional theatre with a staff of over 60 and annual revenues of more than £2m, Ali designed audience development and marketing projects with a focus on socially excluded communities. She is a successful fundraiser, including from the national lottery, arts funding bodies and business sponsorship. She is also expert in organising and managing events, including arts festivals.
Ali has a special interest in social policy and social justice as applied to young people, having experience as a volunteer youth mentor, a locum residential care officer and a Member of a Children's Panel.Through her interest in children and young people she established two youth theatres, devised and delivered community theatre workshop programmes, devised a ground-breaking Young People’s reading programme, and produced several large-scale community plays.
