| What is Community Learning and Development? |
| 2004 Scottish Executive Guidance on CLD (Working and Learning Together - WALT) states:
“We are using the term 'community learning and development' to describe a way of working with and supporting communities……. to increase the skills, confidence, networks and resources they need to tackle problems and grasp opportunities….Its main aim is to help individuals and communities tackle real issues in their lives through community action and community-based learning.”
WALT also sets out thee national priorities for CLD and the study will therefore reflect these:
• Achievement through learning for adults
• Achievement through learning for young people
• Achievement through building community capacity

| Who Should Take Part in the Study? |
| If you recognise your work as being relevant to any of three areas listed above (What is Community Learning and Development?) then we'd like you to complete the questionnaire.
We would like to hear from those involved in the design and delivery of CLD services and activities. This includes a wide range of public agencies as well as voluntary organisations and community groups.

| What Will the Study Consider? |
| We would like to know more about the nature and extent of CLD work with equalities* groups, examples of effective practice, and challenges and opportunities. We’d also like to know what action you think Learning Connections or others should take to support this work.
We have commissioned Avanté Consulting to undertake this work. We have also established an Advisory Group and a wider Reference Group (drawn from across a range of agencies engaged in equalities work) to assist with the study.
The information gathered will inform our future policy and CLD practice support. We see this study as the first phase of longer-term work. A report on this first phase is expected to be published by early summer 2005.
*In line with the Scotland Act 1998 we are focusing attention on the following equality strands:
gender ;
race and ethnicity ;
disabled people ;
older people ;
sexual orientation ;
and faith groups .
